Helder Cruz has a 5 year degree in Applied. Chemistry, branch of Biotechnology, an MBA in International Businesses and a PhD in Biotechnology. He has large scientific experience gained through the participation in several international research projects, including various periods abroad (GBF-Germany, MIT-USA). Currently, he is managing partner of ECBio, Invited Professor at the Independent University in Lisbon, and Advisor at the Biosensors Laboratory of ITQB-IBET in Oeiras.

Pedro Cruz, PhD , MBA

Pedro Cruz has a 5 year degree in Chemical Engeneering, branch of Biotechnology, an MBA in International Businesses, and a PhD in Biotechnology. Currently, he is managing partner of ECBio, Invited Professor at the Universidade Atlântica in Oeiras, and Advisor at the Animal Cell Technology Laboratory of ITQB-IBET in Oeiras.

Ana Verónica Carvalhal, PhD
cell culture and process development

Ana Verónica Carvalhal has a 5 year degree in Chemical Engineering, branch of Biotechnology, and a PhD in Biotechnology. Her scientific expertise on animal cell growth control and biopharmaceuticals production, involves the application of cell cycle analysis by flow cytometry, drug toxicity assessment, cell metabolism and cell physiology characterization, cell culture development and culture medium optimization. Her experience was also acquired during various periods abroad (Novo Nordisk-Denmark, Boehringer Ingelheim Pharma-Germany, ETH-Switzerland, Schering AG-Germany). She is currently responsible for the cell culture and process development at ECBio.

Vera Basto


Vera Basto has a 5 year degree in Biochemistry. She has acquired experience in microbiology techniques such as growth, nutrition, isolation and freezing of bacteria and also in molecular biology techniques, namely, PCR and colony hybridization. At ECBio, she is currently working in cell culture for recombinant protein production optimization, cell adaptation to serum-free media and culture of pancreatic cells.

Luís Apolónia


Luís Apolónia holds a 5 year degree in Biotechnology Engineering. He has scientific experience in molecular biology (RT-PCR, DNA sequencing, Northern Blot, among others) and cell culture technology. His research activities have been developed in several companies and institutes, either in Portugal (STABVida, ITQB-IBET, Universidade do Algarve), either abroad (Technological Institute-Denmark, Bioneer-Denmark). Currently, he is developing work in toxicology and in the cryopreservation/ hypothermic preservation of cells.
